- DuralcanTM Metal Matrix Composites (MMCs)
The DURALCANTM Metal matrix Composites (MMCs) are aluminum alloys that are particulate reinforced and as a result combine certain properties of the matrix aluminum alloy with
- increased wear/friction resistance
- increased elastic modulus - high stiffness
- improved NVH (noise and vibration) behaviour
- increased strength (and decreased elogation)
- increased temperature resistance
- reduced coefficient of thermal expansion - thermal stability
made possible by the presence of predetermined fine and well-distributed (SiC, AlO, B4C) particles.
DURALCANTM is a speciality material produced only at the Dubuc plant in the Saguenay region of Quebec, Canada and shipped all over the world. Casting DURALCANTM into parts is not easy and attached guidelines (at the bottom of this page) have to be followed.Extrusion and especially machining are a real challenge
For foundry applications, mainly SiC reinforced MMCs are used. SiC particles are heavier than liquid aluninum, so they settle down and therefore need to be properly stirred, while in the melting or holding furnace to be homogeniously distributed.

For companies who are considering using parts from DURALCANTM Metal matrix Composites (MMCs) components, we can suggest foundries or extruders in North America, Europe and Asia, who have extensive experience producing components in these alloys. Using these experienced companies can significantly reduce the time and cost required to obtain the part. They can for example, help you design the component in a way that machining is minimized and costs therefore are drastically reduced.
One very experienced foundry customer of ours is Eck Industries in Manitowoc, WI, (http://www.eckindustries.com). You can contact Dave Weiss at 920-682-4618 or david.weiss@eckindustries.com for any enquiries or questions you may have with respect to casting this material.
For inquiries please contact Martin Hartlieb, Manager Market Development at 514-848-8502 or e-mail at martin.hartlieb@riotinto.com
Common Examples:
The F3S.20S (AA 359/SiC/20p) composite was developed for general foundry usage from plaster cast to permanent mould, while the F3N.20S (AA 360/Sic/20p) series of composites was developed for high-pressure die-casting. Please bear in mind that we have a large variety of different Duralcan products (both matrix alloys and participle contents), but we always have a minimum order quantity of 5 metric tons per material.
The following attachments provide information on
- typical physical and tensile properties and hardness of DURALCANTM
- preferred melting and recycling practices
- casting guidelines
